SALEM - A Lynn convicted of manslaughter in the stabbing death of his girlfriend has been sentenced to the maximum 18-20 years in state prison.

Rodlyn Petitbois had been charged with murder in the case, but a jury last month found him guilty of the lesser charge.

Judge David Lowy imposed the maximum sentence on Monday, citing the level of violence in the crime.

Prosecutors say Petitbois stabbed 33-year-old Greenland Etienne in July 2008 during an argument. Authorities say he had gone to Etienne’s home because his girlfriend and their four children had moved in with her. The girlfriend alleged that Petitbois beat her.

Petitbois testified that Etienne got in the way during a knife fight with another man.
