LONG BEACH - A 44-year-old man allegedly shot and wounded a 19-year-old female family member before turning the gun on himself Saturday in a neighborhood near Cal State Long Beach, authorities said.

Police were called to a home in the 6800 block of E. 10th Street at 3:47 a.m. regarding a woman who had been shot by a family member, said Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani. Officers were able to rescue the 19-year-old woman, who was transported to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body, she said.

The suspect, however, refused to exit the residence, police said.

SWAT officers stormed the home and found the man, identified Sunday as James Scarcella of Long Beach, dead from a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said Scarcella's death was ruled a suicide.

Police did not release further details on the relationship between the two family members. The incident is under investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans or Daniel Mendoza at 562-570-7244.
