Kingsport, TN: Suspect in domestic violence case shot, killed by Kingsport police officer

KINGSPORT — A domestic violence suspect was shot and killed by a Kingsport Police Department officer Saturday afternoon and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the case.
The officer arrived at 2010 Bruce St., located near the rear campus of Johnson Elementary School, after Kingsport Central Dispatch received a call at around 1:30 p.m. reporting a female who had been beaten running from the home and a male suspect near the home brandishing a firearm, said Kingsport Police Chief Gale Osborne.
“The (Kingsport Police Department) officer responded, and the suspect pointed a handgun at the officer. The officer shot the suspect. The suspect was then taken to Holston Valley (Medical Center),” Osborne told the Times-News.
The chief said he contacted the (Sullivan County) District Attorney’s Office and then the TBI shortly after he arrived to the scene.
Osborne also noted that a young child of the couple was at home at the time of the incident but was not injured.
Saturday evening, a TBI agent was gathering evidence from inside a Honda Odyssey minivan parked vertically near the sidewalk at the home. The van had two bullet holes in the front windshield.
TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm said in an e-mail to the Times-News Saturday evening that the male suspect was in his mid-40s and neither his name nor the name of the Kingsport police officer was being released pending further investigation.
